I bumped into a new blog this weekend, ‘A Guy Called Bloke’ run by Rory, that is running a “Weekend Quickie” series which poses a series of questions. I thought, why not give it a try. I also encourage you to check out Rory’s blog for other interesting content and give him a follow.
The 10 Questions from A Guy Called Bloke (& My Answers)
Q1: Is political correctness too politically correct?
Political correctness (and it’s reactionary “war on…” everything propaganda from the right), in my view, has become a form of policing ourselves and others based on political agendas vs. social values. I’d much rather us communicate and behave in ways that are consistent with the values of kindness, empathy, and care for each other than use divisive rhetoric and manufactured outrage as seems the current paradigm. The measure of whether something is “correct” or “acceptable” in our society, should be if it is caring and kind and promotes true discourse and understanding.
Q2: What are you good at?
I’d say I’m good at being curious and self-learning. Growing up I struggled in the normal academic environment and traditional teaching approaches. It wasn’t until I realized that I could “figure things out myself” that I started to, not only be more successful academically, but also be more happy. Now I’m constantly seeking new things to learn and especially appreciate learning by trying. Thinking is over-rated. I’m much more successful in learning by doing, failing, and then trying again.
Q3: How did you learn to deep kiss?
When I was in fifth grade I kissed a girl on the mouth for the first time and tongue was involved. Honestly, all the romantic kissing that I’d seen in media involved tongue so I just assumed it was necessary. The girl did not agree.
Q4: When was the last time you took an unexpected turn and where did it take you?
The last big turn or “leap” that I took was when I quit my job about a year and a half ago. I was seriously unhappy and for the first time in my career I resigned and decided to “take a step back”. I took a new job that on paper was smaller/lower/less-paying but seemed like it would provide more opportunities for me to be happy each day (or at least not miserable!). It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was highly motivated and that translated into new opportunities and unexpected advancement. More importantly, I’m genuinely happier.
Q5: What are the benefits of having a purple front door?
It’s easy to give instructions to the delivery guy so nothing is ever delivered accidentally to your neighbors again.
Q6: What patterns don’t mix, and why not, or can you mix anything and get away with it with ease?
If you wear it with (genuine) confidence you can get away with anything.
Q7: BDSM stands for what?
Interesting times.
Q8: How do you know that you are smiling right when you are smiling?
If the other person smiles back.
Q9: When was the last time you hung a picture and what was it of?
Last summer I participated in a visual art challenge where I created cover art for a science-fiction story. Here it is:

Q10: You have two choices, the blue or the red pill. Which one do you take and why?
Blue. Feels more peaceful.
Bonus Question: Who said ‘If I swore you were an angel, Would you treat me like the devil tonight’ and who were they talking to?
I don’t know the “correct” answer here but this sounds like a song lyric. In my imagination, this is what my lover said to me the first night we spent together.
Thanks again to Rory for the questions. This was fun.
Be well,
Monty
