Since it’s poetry month, I thought I would try out some new forms and I bumped into a great blog post from A Different Perspective listing out 13 poetic form prompts. A big thanks to them for the inspiration
Prompt 11
Write an Ottava Rima poem or
Write a poem incorporating the theme of vision
A Different Perspective by muisopsis
Here are the guidelines for a Ottava Rima:
– Made up of eight lines
– Rhyme scheme: abababcc
– Typically iambic pentameter/10-syllable lines
So seems like a nice little compact and rhythmic form. I ended up doing 8 syllable lines (I somehow had 8 stuck in my head and didn’t realize my “mistake” until I’d completed the whole thing). I also had more to say then I could fit in a single stanza so I doubled up. So I guess I took some poetic license with this one. Let’s check it out!
Love Envisioned
I used to believe love is pure
Like a blessing bestowed upon;
Never to be lost or unsure
Once earned never to be unwon;
That diamond promise’s endure
Toughened by time and pressure’s ton.
This — a fantasy of my youth
Now brittled by loving’s hard truth.
Today I know love is a wild ride;
A messy one with no straight path;
Like riding the sea’s changing tide
When strong winds bring their sudden wrath;
Or stagnant sails droop in winds died
And we forget to cry or laugh;
This — a non-fiction adventure,
Love can be anything but sure.
What do you think? About the form? About the poem? Let me know. Thanks for stopping by.
Be well,
Monty

Monty this is a lovely poem and really does tell the truth about true love! As for the form eight or 10 syllables (shrug) I don’t think it is a deal breaker and the form requires at LEAST one stanza but multiple stanzas are encouraged – so you are all good there! I bet you could try this again and get even more comfortable with it…

Thanks 😊- I usually like to follow the form guidelines pretty closely when learning it but then give myself the freedom to play later on. I think the structure that forms provide are great for innovation — kinda like a creativity puzzle. I’m learning so much from you this month! Thank you again.
