Here is my latest post for the #AtoZChallenge for April 2022. My title and theme for this challenge is “Seriously Silly Poetry” in recognition of April being poetry month and also wanting to do something fun and playful to celebrate spring. I hope you enjoy this series.
A Question or Two
Papa, may I ask a question of you?
Sure, sweet pea, go ahead I’ve got time for one or two.
Thanks Papa, I’ve got a lot on my mind.
Is that so, sweetie? What answers are you trying to find?
Well, what I’m wondering most about is why?
Why what, my dear? Tell me and I’ll give the answer a try.
Well Papa, I’m wondering why are alligators green?
Is it because they’re so mean?
And why do bears like honey?
Do they trade it for money?
Why are cheetahs so fast?
Are they running away from their past?
And why aren’t donkeys blue?
I think that would be a wonderful hue.
Why are elephant’s noses so long?
Doesn’t that seem a little bit wrong?
And ferrets should be pink,
Like flamingos, don’t you think?
Oh and why are giraffes so tall?
Is it so they can look over the wall?
Sweetie. Sweetie, please hold on a bit.
You’ve got a lot of interesting questions I admit.
Yes, Papa, but I’ve got more questions to ask.
Like why do horses eat hay?
Who made them that way?
And why do iguanas lay eggs?
And have such funny looking legs?
Oh, Papa, can you tell me why jackals chase?
Are they running a race?
And kangaroos with there pouches, why is that so?
Do you know, Papa, do you know?
My dear, My dear, would you hold on a minute?
If you’d ask me one question at a time, I’d answer it.
But Papa, I’m curious why lemurs are so mute?
Well, I’m not sure if they are, but they sure are cute!
Thinking of mice, why do they steal cheese?
Shouldn’t they be polite and say please?
And what’s with the narwhal and its horn?
It’s like a sea creature stuck by a thorn.
Oh and I really must ask why isn’t an octopus a cat?
With pus in the name, shouldn’t it be that?
And penguins are just silly,
Can’t we on this agree?
Why do some people eat quail?
They always taste like chicken without fail.
Speaking of chickens, what’s up with the rooster’s call?
Who said he can wake up us all?
Take a breath little one. Take a breath.
You’ll turn pale if you don’t inhale.
But Papa, don’t you wonder these things too?
I’ve got to ask you even if I turn blue.
Like why do squid have ink?
Do they write down what they think?
And what about turtles, why are they so smart?
They always win the race despite their slow start.
Why don’t they have unicorns in the zoo?
They would sell a lot more tickets if they did. That’s true!
Do vulture’s really eat road kill?
Doesn’t it make their bellies ill?
And walrus’ tusks, are they for fighting?
Seems like they would get in the way of biting.
Okay. Okay. Have you asked all your questions yet?
I’ve got so many answers to get ready set.
Oh, Papa, but I’ve got some more questions in store.
Can I ask a few more?
Let me guess you want to ask me about the xerus?
Well, Papa, yes, please if you were serious.
But I also need to know if I can ride on a yak.
There seems to plenty of room on its back.
And what about the zebra, why not polka-dots?
Stripes are nice but I’d love them with dots.
Are you done now my love? Have your questions run out?
Are you done now my love? You’ve been on quite the route.
Well, Papa, actually I’ve still got some queries
Like why don’t alligators and zebras get married?
…

Be well,
Monty

I remember when my kids were of the age when all they did was ask questions. 🙂

Hehe! The constant “why” of children – sometimes they just like to ask the question and the answers are secondary or not important at all!!

When I shared this with my daughter she recalled that I used to always answer her questions with random information that may or may not be accurate and then suggest she do some research to double check. She’s getting her PhD now so I guess the strategy worked. Haha.
