Who Am I? (2022 NaPoWriMo #08)

May might be here but I’m still working through the NaPoWriMo – 30 Poems in 30 Days prompts since I discovered them late.

Prompt 08

Write a poem from the perspective of your alter ego.

NaPoWriMo.net

Hmm. My alter ego? I took one of those online quizzes to see what alter ego I could possibly be and got ‘Cornholio’ from Beavis and Butthead. I usually trust these ad ridden online quizzes 100%, but this time I’m a bit questioning of the results. Cornholio?! Really? The full description included “you just can’t contain yourself when stimulated – caffeine, sugar, and excitement… you get jittery, crazy, and bounce off the walls…but hey, sometimes it’s okay to be a little insane!”

I definitely take more then my share of caffeine via coffee, but it gets me from sluggish to some semblance of normal. And the only walls I’ll bounce off of would be a horizontal one when I crash for sleep. But is that what an alter ego is? An opposite? I’m so confused. According to google the definition is “a person’s secondary or alternative personality”. Can’t that be anything? Perhaps its the personality that we wished we had? This is quite a puzzle.

Perhaps my alter ego is the human behind Monty? If my pen name is an alternative identity then could this be true? But Monty and I are one and the same. Identical in personality. So this doesn’t seem to be the intended meaning.

I truly don’t know what I’m going to do with this one. Oh, well. Let’s see.

Who Am I?

Who am I? Am I you and you me? Or am I opposite of thee?
Am I the mystery or the mystery within the mystery?
Or perhaps I’m the answer awaiting discovery?

Who are you? Are you me and I you? Or are you my opposite too?
If you were a color (or colour) would you be red or blue?
Or perhaps black (or white) without any hue?

Who are we? Me and thee? Are we of the same family tree?
Do we share roots, shoots, branches, all three?
Or perhaps you are from the land and I the sea?

Who are you two? Brothers, cousins, alter egos?
Have you discovered anything from this poetic prose?
Or perhaps you’re still trying to find what’s right in front of your nose?

Well, I’m not sure I lived into the prompts intent, but there is a poem here that wasn’t here before so I call that success.

Be well,

Monty

You did a great job and the concept of alter ego has my brain doing excited little skips – I’m trying to calm it down because I have enough trouble with the ego I know let alone the one that may be it’s alternative – then again, maybe it’s a better alternative…skip skip skip 😁

Haha. Skipity doo da skipity doo day… I think most of us could use a break from our own egos at least periodically.

Yeah – it’s a pretty crap quiz, but oh well. I don’t know that character either.

Not intentionally, but now I’ve got to go back and have a listen! Haha.

  4. The bit about online quizzes made me chuckle. Maybe there was a note at the bottom that the results only apply to people 18 and younger? Didn’t you bounce off the walls then?

I indeed failed to read the fine print.
