Among the Tea Leaves (#Wheat)

She walked among the tea leaves;
The air scented with jasmine
Dampened with the lightest of rains;
Her dress, a patchwork of grassy greens
And golden wheat,
Stretched over her swollen belly —
Quietly announcing our child’s soonest arrival.

A Long Night in Denver (#Bronze)

She lay next to me upon the crisp white sheets.
Her skin dark bronze, a rich cocoa
Moist from the summer heat,
Muscles defined and glistening.

I dared not move to disturb her,
We were travel companions, nothing more,
Sharing the last bed in the youth hostel,
Out of necessity.

My eyes staring at the yellowed ceiling tiles above,
I wondered what she was dreaming of
?

Bone-Deep (#Muse)

Muse me,
Mull me over,
Turn me around and upside down,
Let’s see what can be found
Beneath my fragile skin,
Let’s dig past the wounds
Let’s get bone-deep,
Past all the concealments,
The camouflage,
The muscles, the tendons,
The bloody flesh,
For somewhere, in there,
I just might be…
Lovable.

Jealousy and Jack (#Jealously)

Jealousy pounced upon my lap,
Declaring what I thought was mine as hers,
She purred confidently,
Knowing I was hers for the taking,
These humans so easy to manipulate!
She seemed to say smugly,
(Needless to say).

Jack watched all this from his spot on the floor,
Reluctantly accepting Jealousy would always get her way.
He tucked his nose to tail and closed his eyes to nap,
Where he dreamed of chasing Jealousy away.

The bartender answered the old-school phone behind the bar. He listened for a few seconds, then asked the room “Is J. Lousy in the house? J. Lousy?” After a thoughtful pause, everyone in the room raised their hand and confessed “Jealousy here”.

They met at the park, having told no one. They giggled shyly as they saw each other. Their hands lightly brushed against each other as they turned down the path toward the pond where the swans were swimming. As they came to the water’s edge they saw their reflection rippling on the surface between the lily pads — both smiling goofily. Then their eyes closed and their lips lightly met.

#Lion

The once regal beast had lost his pride;
His tawny coat no longer glossy,
Patched and clumped, exposing skin;
Teeth dulled and yellow,
Notched by every kill
Now long forgotten;
His mighty roar replaced by
A hungry grumble slowly fading
Along with care;
As the lion lays his head down,
His body shudders a final breath,
And he rests,
Alone.

Monty’s Very Short Shorts – Hero

#Hero

Back in May of 2020, when I first started writing, I wrote a short poem I called Hero. It went as follows:

“Twisted and tortured in mind, body, and soul;
I heroically begin another day.”

It was a brutally honest reflection of how I felt. Today, I awake peacefully. I begin my days with joy and positivity. I share my joy with others. I inspire. I lift those around me to the light. Still a hero.

“Hero” – originally published in “Thirteen Words” (2020)

Mother’s Day, 1980ish (#Golden)

I was determined to make breakfast. “The Joy of Cooking” was open on a counter dusted with white flour and dotted with droplets of oil and eggshell. The skillet was hot. Too hot. My first, second, and third attempts were blackened and the room was smokey. Cutting the flame, I tried again with the last bit of batter. I waited impatiently until I couldn’t wait longer. I made the flip and to my amazement there lay golden perfection. My mom loved the pancake. Not so much the mess.

“What’s better than honey?” I asked Pooh.

“More honey, of course!” he answered with a jiggly chuckle as he dipped back into the honey pot.
