They met at the park, having told no one. They giggled shyly as they saw each other. Their hands lightly brushed against each other as they turned down the path toward the pond where the swans were swimming. As they came to the water’s edge they saw their reflection rippling on the surface between the lily pads — both smiling goofily. Then their eyes closed and their lips lightly met.

Monty’s Very Short Shorts – Lion

#Lion

The once regal beast had lost his pride;
His tawny coat no longer glossy,
Patched and clumped, exposing skin;
Teeth dulled and yellow,
Notched by every kill
Now long forgotten;
His mighty roar replaced by
A hungry grumble slowly fading
Along with care;
As the lion lays his head down,
His body shudders a final breath,
And he rests,
Alone.

Monty’s Very Short Shorts – Hero

#Hero

Back in May of 2020, when I first started writing, I wrote a short poem I called Hero. It went as follows:

“Twisted and tortured in mind, body, and soul;
I heroically begin another day.”

It was a brutally honest reflection of how I felt. Today, I awake peacefully. I begin my days with joy and positivity. I share my joy with others. I inspire. I lift those around me to the light. Still a hero.

“Hero” – originally published in “Thirteen Words” (2020)

Mother’s Day, 1980ish (#Golden)

I was determined to make breakfast. “The Joy of Cooking” was open on a counter dusted with white flour and dotted with droplets of oil and eggshell. The skillet was hot. Too hot. My first, second, and third attempts were blackened and the room was smokey. Cutting the flame, I tried again with the last bit of batter. I waited impatiently until I couldn’t wait longer. I made the flip and to my amazement there lay golden perfection. My mom loved the pancake. Not so much the mess.

Double Honey Dipping (#Honey)

“What’s better than honey?” I asked Pooh.

“More honey, of course!” he answered with a jiggly chuckle as he dipped back into the honey pot.

The Forbidden Fruit (#Pomegranate)

There is a misconception that the forbidden fruit was an apple. The truth is the Bible doesn’t specify. But if I had a guess, it must have been a pomegranate. After all, the pomegranate is the epitome of an anti-fruit. How else can you explain that you’re supposed to eat the seeds and not the flesh? They’re evil, I tell you. Deliciously evil.

A Dad Joke (#Gods)

The boy hid under his covers as the house shook from the thunder.

“Daddy! Daddy! I’m scared!”

“Why are you scared? That’s just the Gods laughing”

“What are they laughing at?”

“I told them a joke”

Just then, the thunder roared again even louder and the boy giggled.

“Daddy, your jokes aren’t THAT funny!”

“Tell that to the Gods!”, he roared and they both laughed as the thunder continued to rumble.

Monty’s Very Short Shorts – War

#War

As an American, I should be well versed on this topic. After all, we are involved in every war in one way or another. But, like most American’s, I’ve never been to war. At least not the international armed conflicts that I fund with my taxes and, I’m told, are the backbone of American industry. For all the warring that we do, we seem to have a knack for keeping it at an arms length except for the unfortunate soldiers we send to kill on our behalf. I’m an American. This is who we are.

The Snack Shop Girl (#snake)

She snaked across the darkened room, sitting down next to a man in a grey suit. He looked like every other salaryman in the place. A bit wrinkled from a long day in the office. As she caught my eyes on her, she let slip a sly smile, before turning back. Several whiskies and many glances later, my heart dropped as I saw her leave for the door. I lowered my head and took a long draw on my drink thinking of calling it a night. Then a waft of delicate perfume hit me as she slipped next to me. The night had just begun.

He gifted me a word and the blank page that lies before me. He encouraged me to make something of it. To be creative. There are no rules…anything goes. I fondle the word like a stone. Feeling its weight. A bit heavier than I expected. It starts off hard and rough to the touch, but slowly softens. Becoming lighter and brighter. When suddenly it takes flight, magically transforming into an idea that captures my imagination. All from a word. And a blank page.
