Sleep on It (#Shirk)

I couldn’t sleep last night,
I kept tossing and turning,
Getting twisted in the bedsheets,
As my mind twirled and whirled,
Spinning on a single word
That I just wouldn’t let go of,
I couldn’t shirk the feeling
That I was letting myself down
By trying to sleep on it.

Let’s see here. “A. B. C. D. E. F. G….L.M.N.O. P!”
Here we are “Pa, Pe, Pi, Po, Pro, Pros, Prosody!”
Hmm – “the patterns of rhythm and sound used in poetry”.
Oh! I see! Kinda like a melody, but poetically?

Hunting Season (#Hunt)

Hunting season is a let down to be honest. I like a bit of challenge in my sport and picking off all these dolts wearing bright orange gear is like the cliche expression of “shooting fish in a barrel”. Last week I snagged seven kills in a single day. It’s child’s play, really.

How to Poet (#Stirring)

Mix in some savory tears
(I find the happy variety offers the greatest flavor)
A pinch of bitterness goes a long way,
Of course you need some good old sweet sadness
And finally a chuckle or two for kicks.
You may follow this recipe loosely,
But, for the love of God, Never. Stop. Stirring.

Joe (#Catwalk)

Joe worked the catwalk like no other. The higher the floor the more flourish he added. The other guys, enjoying the show, would egg him on. He loved it. One day, working on the 73rd floor of a new office building, he pulled out his pair of steel-toed high heels (safety first!) and started to do his “rivet dance”. Unfortunately, he was so into doing his thing he didn’t even see Bob there. I won’t get into the details, but let’s just say that day’s show was particularly riveting.

The Substitute (#Dolphin)

Alright. Alright class. Settle down!
As you know, Mrs. Brown is on leave today,
So we have Mr. Dolphman here to substitute.

Mr. Dolphman enters the classroom to a collective gasp and a rush of whispers.

What is he? Is that what I think it is?! Half-man. Half-dolphin?

Mr. Dolphman ignored the commotion and instructed the students to open up their biology textbooks to the chapter on genetic engineering. Today would be a more practical lesson than usual.

The Big G (#Loop)

We looped-da-looped,
Whipped and flipped,
Up was down, and down was up;
I enjoyed my ride, on the wild side.
But unfortunately for all involved,
As we continued to revolve,
My insides came out, in a giant spout;
It was quite a mess, I confess,
But what do you expect,
From a ride named Grotesque?

The Dragons Danced (#Red)

The dragons danced in flight,
Shooting red flames into the night,
Signaling another hero’s demise
Warning anyone else that tries,
For if you dare, to enter their lair,
You’re in for one hell of a fight.

At the Nagoya Zoo (#Dust)

He was beautiful in his own majestic way. Sad eyes with lashes that seemed to go on forever. Grey skin wrinkled after years of basking in the sun. Calloused, dusty feet from so many miles trekked. He stood silently, swaying, almost swinging with somber musicality. Looking past the bars as children and couples played beyond reach, he sunk upon his calloused joints. No more miles to trek. No more days to remember.

Vermont Maple (#Split)

The majestic maple lumbered tall — providing extra shade to our sagging front porch. Each autumn she would cover the ground with thick layers of crisp, colorful leaves and we would pile them higher than we could stand. She watched us play.

When a major storm swept through and lightning split her down the middle it was only a matter of time. The weight of her once steady limbs now threatening — we chopped her down. She became the heat for our home through the long winter. To the end she gave.
