Winter’s Bloom (Decima)

Since it’s poetry month, I thought I would try out some new forms and I bumped into a great blog post from A Different Perspective listing out 13 poetic form prompts. A big thanks to them for the inspiration

Prompt 3

Write a Decima poem or

Write a poem using the theme of roses

A Different Perspective by muisopsis

Here are the guidelines for the most popular version of Decima:

– 10 lines with 8 syllables per line

– Rhyming pattern: ABBAACCDDC

This version of the Decima was popularized in Puerto Rico and is often used in song.

Ok, here I go.

(Oh and I might just go ahead and include the optional theme of roses. Not totally sure yet. Let’s see!).

Winter’s Bloom

A mid-winter’s mistaken bloom
Blossomed in the shortest day’s light
Gifting me it’s beautiful sight
Needed respite from the dark gloom
Splashes of color all too soon
Escaping winter’s frigid hold
Uncurling beauties lips so bold
Awakening the spring in me
A fragile pink not meant to be
Frosted petals melting my cold.

Cool! That was fun! It also allowed me to repurpose this “Winter Bloom” image that I love so much. Its a digital art piece that I created this past winter after seeing a single rose bloom in our winter garden. It’s a digitally enhanced photograph of the actual rose.

What do you think? Wanna give this form a try?

Be well,

Winter Bloom

It’s six degrees Celsius outside, but there is no winter hibernation for this rose blossom. What a beauty.
