On Reading Poetry

I seem to be in a poetic mood these days. Apparently my mind is already thinking ahead to April and poetry month.

As part of my Golden Shovel collaborative project, I’ve been reading a lot more poetry. To be honest, I’m much more comfortable writing poetry than reading. There was something about learning to read poetry in school that made it so imposing. I think it was because the teacher asked us to interpret and understand vs. just experience the poetry and find our own meaning.

Anyway, it was these thoughts that led me to today’s little poem.

On Reading Poetry

Striping off your ofs, ands, and thes.

Gnawing through your tough, gristly descriptive bits.

Down to the stone-white bones.

Breaking into your core

And thirstily drinking your marrow.

Be well,

Monty

I always hated the “but what do you think the poet MEANS by this?” Like I really don’t care haha I just want to either enjoy it or not and move on lol

The funny thing is it wouldn’t be crazy that if you asked me what I meant in any given poem that I write I may not be able to answer either.

LOL but asking the person who wrote it is different than trying to decide what a person meant who has been dead for like 200 years lol its too much some times 😅

Right! I’m saying it’s even more ridiculous to interrogate the dead. Haha.

😅😅😅 my brother actually failed grade 12 English twice for his refusal to “analyze written work” his scholarship to university was based on getting at least a 65 in summer school and they didnt have the big project so he got like 90
