“He was a good little monkey and always very curious.”

Curious George by H.A. Rey

George, Curious George

My name is George, Curious George, but my friends just call me Curious.

Let’s first address the elephant in the room: I did not, would not, could not ever kill the cat. Go ahead, ask the man with the yellow hat.

In fact, the cat in the hat was a very good friend. I cried when his 9th life came to an end.

So why have I been so unfairly accused? Why claim I’m the blame? Who is so strangely amused?

Well, I’ll find out! I’ll be sure to discover who’s casting blame, undercover.

For they don’t call me Curious for no reason. I’ve got all the questioning skills to expose such treason.

Who, what, where and why. How did the cat really die? Lie if you want. Go ahead, try. But I’ll catch you, I promise. For I’m Curious George – Private Eye.

Another one pulled from the archives…”Fruitloops” was originally published in Thirteen Words Volume II, which is a collection of illustrated thirteen word poems (yes, yes, also available from Amazon 😏).

“Everything is great. Everything is grand. We’ve got the whole wide world in the palm of our hand.

“Life’s a Happy Song” — The Muppets

Everything

by Monty Vern

Everything is great. Everything is grand.
Even the kitchen sink is part of this jam band.
With a clang and a bang let’s wake up this sleepy land.

Take off your slippers and boots, it’s time for some hoots.
Holler and dance; no worries; no whoops.
Let’s get mom and dad jumping through hoops.

Build a sand castle in the living room.
Get on up and ride the vacuum.
Now mom and dad are chasing you room to room!

Forget about after-snack naps
Turn on all the water taps
Mom and dad will be swimming laps and laps!

Everything is great. Everything is grand.
There’ll be no nos, nothing is banned.
You’ve got your parents in the palm of your hand.

“If things start happening, don’t worry. Don’t stew. Just go right along and you’ll start happening too.”

Dr. Seuss

Don’t Worry

by Monty Vern

“Things happen” they say
Things will be as they may
Eyes will get blurry
My advice is “Don’t worry.”
It’s ok to feel sad,
It’s ok to get mad.
Let it out,
With a holler and a shout.
Let it out
With a cry or a pout.
Let it out.
Let it out.
You’ll feel better this day,
If your let it out this way.

Well, I didn’t plan on having the first three posts all pulling from previous work, but apparently I’ve covered the beginning of the alphabet well and “C is for…Chat-a-Grump” was originally published as part of Monty’s Very Short Shorts – an illustrated collection of very short stories and poems (and yes, since you asked, it’s available from Amazon…oh, you didn’t ask? My mistake).

B is for…Butt in the Air (#AtoZ)

Here is my second post for the #AtoZChallenge for April 2022, my first time participating as I’m relatively new to the blogging world. I’m looking forward to engaging with more of this wonderful community through this challenge. For those that don’t know me, I’m a writer/illustrator/blogger based in Shanghai, China. You can learn more about me here.

My title and theme for this challenge is “Seriously Silly Poetry” in recognition of April being poetry month and also wanting to do something fun and playful to celebrate spring. Seriously Silly Poetry will include poems from A to Z that are inspired by the child in me and other creatives that celebrate childhood (such as Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, etc.). All of the poetry and illustrations will be creations from me. Most will be original creations for this series, but from time to time I will pull from one of my illustrated books or earlier posts if it fits with the theme.

I hope you enjoy this series. Welcome to Monty’s Blahg!

This post is a re-illustrated version of a poem that I wrote about two years ago when I first started creatively writing. Originally titled “Namaste”, I thought it could work well here with a little fun name change.

Butt in the Air (a.k.a. Namaste)

by Monty Vern

Once a day I roll out the mat
Contorting my body
Into downward dog and cat
As my mind catches up
Letting go of this and of that.

As I send my behind
Flying up sky high
My wandering mind
May stretch into the past
With many thoughts not so kind

If not into the past
Then back to the future
Racing forward too fast
Despite standing still
As a warrior stoned and cast

But as time slows
And my breathing centers
While resting in child’s pose
Peace overcomes me
And only my mind knows

Now ready for the day
I roll up my mat
Grateful to say
Thanks to myself,
Namaste.

This post is a repost of a fairly recent poem and I hesitated to use this as the first post, but it’s so perfect for the theme I couldn’t help myself. My original thought was to use this poem and illustration for a new picture book for children, but my son pointed out that the language might be a bit to advanced for that purpose. However, its still fun and playful and most importantly I love it! So here it is.

a Golden Shovel from “Ars Poetica” by Archibald MacLeish

Apples eating zebras and z’s to a

I cobble together words in a poem

Making nonsense I should not but should

Gobble up wobbles and play vocab tricks to be

Escaping tricky corners with palpable

Tight and twisty turns and

Flamboyant gestures of an eloquent mute

Breaking forms with made-up rhymes as

A wanna-be poet throwing a

Bucket of colorful words upon a globed

Canvas and calling it a bowl of fruit.

#AtoZ Theme Updated With Cover Art

With the encouragement of a good blogging buddy (she knows who she is), I’m going to give the #AtoZChallenge a go this year. As I understand it, this is a challenge to post once per day (except Sundays) during the month of April with posts connected to the letter of the day. “A is for…” etc. One may have a theme for the month or not.

Since April is poetry month as well, I’ve already got some plans to relaunch the Golden Shovel collaboration, but that will not involve daily posting. So I think I can manage both.

The question is what to do from A to Z? I feel, given it’s poetry month, I want to do something in the poetic realm. But I’m also thinking spring is time for joy and fun so why not do poetry inspired by or for children and play?

So here is my idea. An A to Z poetry series based on silly words/characters/ideas from children’s books such as the works of Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and others. It will be called “Seriously Silly Poetry” and here is the cover art for the series. What do you think about the series? How about the cover art? Please let me know below. Hope to see you in April.

Be well,

Monty
